SPWLA Abu Dhabi Topical Conference Multidimensional Reservoir Characterization

Abu Dhabi 14-17 March 2011

Over the past several years, the Abu Dhabi Topical Conference has grown to become the pre-eminent industry conference on Carbonate Petrophysics. For this year, attendance has grown to 150 delegates representing all inhabited continents on the earth.

The key activity within the SPWLA Abu Dhabi chapter was the hosting of the 8th Annual Abu Dhabi Topical Conference, entitled Multidimensional Reservoir Characterization, which was held from the 14th – 17th of March.

A total of 55 abstracts were submitted to the Technical Committee, of which 28 were selected for presentation over the 3 days of technical presentations. Each day covered a different "scale", starting with "Field Scale" on day 1, followed by "Borehole Scale" and "Pore Scale". The conference was opened by Mr.Abdul Munim Saif Al Kindy the Chief Executive Officer of ADCO (Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations).The Second day was opened by Mr.Ray Mitro VP ZFD-ZADCO and the third day by Mr.Matt Bratovich(2010-2011 SPWLA International President).

In all, over a hundred delegates attended the conference over the three days, travelling from the US, UK, France and Australia as well as nearby Middle Eastern states of; Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman along with many local attendees.

A highlight, for those who got their name down early enough, was the conference social and cultural trip on the second afternoon which took in a tour of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, followed by a visit to Ferrari World on Yas Island

There were "Best Presentation" awards for each day of the conference with congratulations going to;

Yahui Yin from ADCO – "Integrating Seismic Attributes with Reservoir Monitoring Data to Understand Dynamic Fluid Flow in a Heterogeneous Carbonate Field"	Javier Franquet from Baker Hughes – "Orthotropic Horizontal Stress Characterization from Logging and Core Derived Acoustic Anisotropies"	Iulien Hulea from Shell – "Carbonate Rock Characterization and Modelling for Improved Properties Prediction - Capillary Pressure and Permeability in Multimodal Rocks"
