Excursion departs 18th May 16:00 from ADNEC for hotel in Ras Al Khaiman (RAK)- Dinner, single room and evening briefing upon arrival. Field excursion departure 19th May 06:30- max. 12:00, return to Hotel in RAK for lunch and debriefing prior to return to Abu Dhabi in time to freshen up for the symposium Ice Breaker.
Kindly note the field trip is available only for attendees of carbonate factory workshop.
The field trip will take you to outcrops of the Musandam Peninsula of Ras Al-Khaimah (U.A.E.), equivalent in age and architecture to the producing Kharaib formations; Thamama Zones A, B & C (Onshore) or Thamama IA, II & IIIA (oshore) reservoirs in the subsurface of Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Outcrops are of seismic scale and thus provide eld-scale cross-sections that help to rene sequence stratigraphic and facies models, and aid to the understanding of reservoir geometry distribution, and reservoir continuity in the subsurface.
The main objective of this eld trip is to compare stratigraphy, sedimentology with special emphasizing on depositional sequences and parasequence stacking patterns of Kharaib formations, outcropping in Wadi Rahabah.
Wadi Rahabah shows rock exposures, which are time-equivalent to the Lower Cretaceous Upper Thamama Group, the most prolic onshore/oshore oil and gas producing zones in Abu Dhabi. You will gain an appreciation for reservoir heterogeneity (sedimentary) and the scale of bedding, stylolites, reservoir unit lithofacies, and fauna (van Buchem et al., 2002; Strohmenger et al., 2004, 2006; Suwaina et al., 2004; Yose et al., 2004a, 2004b, 2006).
A maximum of 30 participants is planned due to logistical and safety considerations. Priority will be given to registrants from outside of the U.A.E. as there exist frequent opportunities to visit these sites locally through other professional bodies.
For those signing up for the field excursion the organisers will require participants to complete a medical declaration form and indemnity waiver.
Although there may not be any significant climbing, due to the nature of the ground surface, appropriate footwear with ankle support is strongly advised. Sandals and other footwear without appropriate protection will not be allowed. The latter part of May in the U.A.E. is the beginning of the hot season, with temperatures in the range 35-40 degrees Centigrade possible. Accordingly, it is the intention of the organisers to leave the hotel for the field by 06:30am promptly. A packed breakfast will be provided for consumption on the short (30-45 minutes) journey from the hotel to Wadi Al Rahabah by 4X4 vehicles.
A safety briefing will be given at the hotel prior to going into the field upon arrival the night before departure into the field. Attendance to the safety briefing is mandatory.
